HOW YOU CAN PREP FOR THE MCAT
You have already begun to prepare to do your best on the MCAT by working hard and taking relevant pre-med classes at your university or college. The content and skills tested on the MCAT are the same as those that help you succeed in your college classes, so keep up the hard work!
In addition to doing your best in school, you can also do the following things to prepare to succeed on the MCAT:
- Start with enough time to begin preparing—at least 2 months or so will give you enough time to read and review the material as well as any gaps in your knowledge
- Reviewing your class notes of relevant classes—the introductory courses in general chemistry general physics, biology, psychology, and sociology along with second and third year organic chemistry and biochemistry is a good starting point
- Practice MCAT sections or MCAT style questions under a timed environment while learning the material. Make sure to go over a passage example of problems every day in each of the four test sections.
- Take full-length MCAT practice tests once every week or two before the real thing to build endurance. The MCAT is a long and complex exam; make sure you have prepared yourself mentally and physically for it by practicing all aspects of the exam.
- After a few weeks, make sure the practice exams are done in one sitting—this helps emulate the real rigors and tiredness of the test and helps teach you to pace yourself.
- After a practice test, go do something else for the day. Come back and look at each of your mistakes the next day. This allows you to separate yourself from the test, but still remember why you chose the answers you did and how to fix them.
- Don’t freeze and work on a single question for too long—all of the questions have the same weight, so spending 5 minutes on a question (and not getting to the rest) will hurt you. The MCAT allows you to mark questions, so come back to it once you have finished the easy ones.
- Deal with test anxiety (relaxation techniques, self-affirmation, familiarity with the exam, etc.)
- Know that you can retake the MCAT if you do not get the score you want
